Deck Input Requested...

Now that it's March (where did the past three months go?!?), we gearing up to finish our deck.  If you missed the progress we made in the fall, check out here, here, and here.  Our framing is complete and approved by our Township Building Inspector so the next step will be installing our drainage system on the upper level since we'll be using underneath as storage.  Then we can get to the fun part... laying the deck planks and putting up the railings and steps.  Greg and I visited a local lumber yard on Saturday to check out some composite decking samples.

I said composite decking, but we are actually going with an all PVC product from Timbertech.  After much deliberation we have narrowed it down to two choices and of course Greg really likes the one and I really like the other.  Here are our choices (shown next to our siding and the white railing that we will use):

Which option do you like better?  I should note that the second one is slightly cheaper than the first one.  It would only amount to a few hundred dollars difference though.

  1. I vote for the first choice (Rustic Bark), it looks a bit more natural in my opinion. The darker color will look great with your siding and the white railing!

  2. I agree with Sherri! I love the dark color and the contrast looks good with your siding with all cool tones !

  3. I can't see your pictures here at work, but I'll add my 2 cents. We got a dark shade of TimberTech as well, as a contrast to our Sandtone siding. We love it, love the color, love everything about it. The only issue is, the darker the color, the more everything shows. Our seed never took in our back yard, so it is dusty when dry and muddy when wet. Every rain drop shows in the dust, and every doggy paw print shows when it is muddy. It doesn't just rinse off when it rains -- it requires a strong stream from the hose nozzle. But when it is clean, it is stunning!

  4. I like them both, but I will go with the second one.

  5. I love light and dark contrast too just like the others Plus Esquire-ran is right! The dark picks up a lot and you must be okay with the maintenance. Option #1 for sure! I just love the darker tones and don't mind the maintenance.

    1. I liked the lighter on. haha. At first I only liked it better because it was cheaper, but when I got it next to the siding, I actually really liked it. It's hard to tell on the sample, but the "striations" in the lighter one look very tropical, which I liked. That being said... I do really like the darker one too! Ahhh, too many choices!

  9. I don't know anything of the product as far as maintenance but I like the dark one BUT it can show more dirt etc than a light floor which is why I went with a lighter wood in my house. I would probably feel the same for outside too but it would be hard to choose anyway!!!!

  10. I like both, but, having owned homes with lighter and darker composite decks previously, I definitely prefer the lighter option from a maintenance and long-term appearance perspective. In my experience, the dark one constantly showed water spots and it looked dusty/dirty constantly. I don't recall either of these issues with the lighter composite deck I owned previously.
